In the 1970’s, medical doctor and psychologist, Bessel Van Der Kolk, began to do research on trauma and its impact on both the psyche and the body. Bessel found that over the course of human development, there were a complex range of biological and psychological responses to traumatic events, and that those effects varied in relation to the individual’s attachment style as well as their developmental stage. In one of his later publications, The Body Keeps the Score, he offers deeper insight into the means by which we can begin to heal this trauma, “I discovered that my professional training, with its focus on understanding and insight, had largely ignored the relevance of the living, breathing body, the foundation of our selves…when you activate your gut feelings and listen to your heartbreak—things begin to change.”
Guiding Philosophy
As a practitioner of the healing arts, I approach growth and evolution from a holistic perspective. Our physical, mental, and emotional bodies are interconnected, as Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.’s work illustrates. It’s pivotal to honor and address all facets of the human experience as we embark on our journey of transformation. When faced with uncertainty or tragedy, it’s easy to be held hostage by our fears. As we connect more with our bodies and our true selves, we are able to embrace negative emotions as messengers, and respond to that fear from a grounded place. We become able to enact the change we so deeply desire.
“Let difficulty transform you. And it will. In my experience, we just need help in learning how not to run away.”
— Pema Chödrön3
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
— Viktor Frankl
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
— Rumi
“Healing is not just a desired outcome of treatment,
it is a potential that is there from the start. We are wired to heal,
to right ourselves, to grow and transform. This is not just a metaphor.
It is what neuroplasticity is about.”
